Your driver loft is not a number, it is a window

A golfer walked in last month wanting to know whether he should drop from 10.5 degrees to 9. He had read that stronger players use less loft and he had recently started hitting the ball further. It is a completely reasonable question and the honest answer took about forty minutes of bench time to reach: he needed twelve.

The confusion is not his fault. Loft is printed on the sole of the club in large numbers, which makes it look like the most important variable. In practice it is one of three inputs into a single output, and the other two are invisible to the golfer standing on the tee.

What actually produces a launch angle

The ball leaves the face at an angle determined by three things acting together: the dynamic loft presented at impact, the direction the clubhead is travelling, and where on the face the strike lands. Static loft — the number stamped on the head — contributes to the first of those and nothing to the other two.

Dynamic loft is the loft the ball actually sees. Shaft lean at impact reduces it. A hosel setting changes it. So does the way the shaft loads and unloads through the strike, which is why two shafts in the same head can produce different launch numbers with the same swing.

The direction of travel is the attack angle, and this is where golfers with identical drivers separate completely. Somebody hitting up on the ball by three degrees is adding those three degrees to the launch condition. Somebody hitting down by four is subtracting them. That seven-degree spread between two golfers is far larger than the difference between a 9-degree head and a 12-degree head.

The practical version: attack angle moves the launch window more than static loft does. Fit the loft to the delivery you have, not to the number you think a better player should be using.

The strike location nobody accounts for

Modern driver faces are curved vertically. A strike above the centre presents more loft and produces less spin; a strike below it does the reverse. This is deliberate design and it works well, but it means a golfer whose average strike sits a quarter inch low is effectively playing a lower-lofted, higher-spin driver than the one they bought.

We tape the face during every driver session for exactly this reason. A pattern clustered low on the face is the single most common cause of the complaint "my driver launches low and spins too much", and no loft change will fix it. Tee height, ball position, and occasionally a shorter build are the actual remedies.

Why more loft usually helps slower deliveries

There is a persistent belief that low loft equals distance. It comes from watching professionals play 8.5-degree heads, which works for them because they generate enough ball speed and enough upward attack angle to keep the ball in the air with very little spin.

Take that setup to a golfer swinging at 88 mph with a slightly downward attack angle and the result is a shot that never gets high enough to carry. The ball comes off low, the spin is too high to compensate, and total distance is limited by a carry number that fell out of the sky early.

The correction is more loft. Almost every golfer we fit under about 95 mph ends up in a head with more static loft than the one they walked in with, and the average carry gain is meaningful. It feels counterintuitive right up until you see the numbers.

What a launch window looks like in practice

Rather than chasing a single launch angle we describe a window: a range of launch and spin combinations that your particular ball speed can support while producing a shot that carries well and lands at an angle you can play from. The window is wider than golfers expect, which is good news — it means there are usually two or three head-and-shaft combinations that will serve you, and preference can legitimately break the tie.

For a golfer producing around 140 mph of ball speed with a neutral attack angle, that window sits roughly between thirteen and sixteen degrees of launch with spin somewhere between 2,300 and 2,900 rpm. For somebody at 115 mph of ball speed, the window moves up to sixteen or eighteen degrees of launch and the spin figure that supports it climbs accordingly.

None of those numbers should be treated as targets by a golfer reading a website. They are examples of shape, not prescriptions. The window belongs to your delivery and it is measured, not looked up.

How the session resolves it

We measure attack angle in the first ten minutes, before touching the rack. That single number tells us which direction to move loft, and it usually surprises the golfer — the number of people who believe they hit up on the ball and actually hit down on it is large.

From there we test static loft in one-degree steps across two or three head architectures, watching launch, spin, descent and dispersion together. The winner is the combination that produces the tightest pattern at an acceptable carry, which is not always the longest one on a single flushed strike.

The golfer who wanted 9 degrees left with 12 and a slightly shorter build. His carry went up by eleven yards and his dispersion tightened by roughly a third. He was, in his own words, irritated about how simple it turned out to be.
