The vocabulary, minus the marketing

Everything on this page is what we would tell you across the bench. None of it requires an engineering degree and none of it comes from a brochure.

Weight is the decision that changes everything else

If you only ever understand one shaft property, make it weight. Total shaft mass sets the rhythm of your swing more directly than any other variable. Go too light and most golfers get quick at the top and lose the sequence. Go too heavy and the club arrives late and the face never squares.

The number is printed in grams and ranges roughly from 40 to 90 in woods and hybrids, and from 60 to 130 in irons. Those ranges overlap in ways that surprise people — a 75-gram graphite iron shaft and a 95-gram steel one can behave far more similarly than the material difference suggests.

We test weight first in every session, in steps of about ten grams, before touching anything else. Once weight is settled the rest of the choices narrow dramatically.

Bend profile beats the flex letter

A shaft is not uniformly stiff. It has a distribution of stiffness along its length, and where the softest section sits changes what the club does. Softer near the tip tends to add launch and spin. Stiffer near the tip tends to hold the ball down and reduce spin. Softer in the middle changes the feel of the load without moving the ball flight much at all.

The flex letter on the label — regular, stiff, and the rest — is a summary that no two manufacturers calculate the same way. One brand's stiff is another brand's regular. We measure frequency on the analyser and compare profiles directly, which is the only way to have an honest conversation about this.

Torque, and why it is mostly a feel property

Torque describes how much the shaft twists along its axis under load, quoted in degrees. Low torque numbers feel firmer and more "boardy". High torque feels smoother and more active. It has a real but modest effect on face angle at impact for most golfers, and a much larger effect on what the club feels like in your hands.

Beware the assumption that lower is always better. Plenty of golfers hit their best shots with a shaft in the mid-range because the extra feedback helps them time the release. This is one of the few places where preference legitimately outranks measurement.

Length, and the yard you did not gain

Adding half an inch to a driver adds a small amount of theoretical clubhead speed and a large amount of centre-strike difficulty. For most golfers the net effect on distance is negative once you account for the strikes that move away from the middle. We build the majority of drivers here shorter than the off-the-rack figure and almost nobody loses yardage.

In hybrids and fairway woods, length matters differently: it changes how steeply the club approaches the ground, which changes ground contact, which is the thing that actually decides whether a fairway wood works from turf.

Tip trimming is not a formality

Almost every wood and hybrid shaft is sold as a raw blank that has to be trimmed at the tip before installation. How much you remove changes the stiffness profile substantially — more than a full flex step in some designs. A shaft trimmed to the wrong chart is a different shaft to the one you thought you bought.

This is one of the most common problems we find in clubs built elsewhere, and it is invisible without a frequency analyser. It costs a golfer nothing to have their existing clubs checked and it explains a surprising number of mysteries.

Where deliveries usually land

These are opening guesses, not prescriptions. Every one of them gets overturned regularly on the bench, which is exactly why the bench exists.

Tempo is the reason these bands break so often. A smooth 105 mph swing frequently prefers a lighter shaft than an aggressive 92 mph swing. Speed alone has never been sufficient to pick a shaft and anybody who tells you otherwise is selling something.

Four claims that do not survive the analyser

"Stiff is for good players"

Flex letters are not skill grades. Plenty of low handicaps play regular flex because their tempo calls for it, and fighting a shaft that is too firm costs speed.

"Graphite is for seniors"

Graphite iron shafts now cover the full weight and stiffness range. Material is a manufacturing choice, not an age bracket.

"Low torque means more control"

Only if it suits your release. For many golfers a lower torque shaft simply feels harsher without tightening dispersion at all.

"The stock shaft is a cheap version"

Sometimes true, often not. Several stock offerings measure identically to their aftermarket namesakes. We test rather than assume.
