A set is a system, not eight copies of one club
Ninety minutes on lie, length, shaft and head category — and a serious look at whether the top of your set should be irons at all.
Lie angle is the cheapest stroke you will ever buy
An iron delivered two degrees upright pulls the ball left. Two degrees flat pushes it right. The effect grows as loft increases, so the wedges suffer most, and it is entirely invisible to the golfer standing over the ball. We check lie on impact tape and a lie board before any head candidate comes out of the rack.
The correction costs a few dollars per club. It routinely produces a larger improvement in dispersion than a complete set replacement would, and it is the reason we push the thirty-minute loft and lie audit at golfers who are not sure a full session is worth it.
Length, and the myth of standard
"Standard" iron length is a manufacturing convention, not a fitted spec, and it varies between brands by up to half an inch for the same numbered club. Wrist-to-floor measurement gives us a starting point, but the deciding evidence is where the strike lands on the face across twenty shots. Long clubs promote toe contact; short ones promote heel contact and a steeper delivery.
Head category, honestly assessed
Modern iron categories blur into each other. A players-distance iron from one house is a game improvement head from another. Rather than argue about labels we compare candidates on three properties: how much the head resists twisting on your typical miss, how much sole relief it has for your delivery, and how strong the lofts are relative to what you already play.
That last point catches people out. A new 7-iron with 28 degrees of loft is not longer than your old 31-degree 7-iron in any meaningful sense — it is a 6-iron with a different number stamped on it, and it will leave a gap at the bottom of your bag that needs an extra wedge to fill.
Blended sets are normal here
Very few golfers are best served by one head model across the whole set. A forgiving hollow-body 5 and 6-iron transitioning into a more compact 7 through pitching wedge is a common and sensible outcome. We match the transition point to where your strike pattern starts tightening, and we specify the blend at no additional charge because it is simply what the measurements said.
Where the set should stop
The top of the iron set is a live question in every session here. If your 4-iron launches at fourteen degrees and descends at thirty-four, it is not holding a green and a hybrid or a 7-wood should take its place. We test that directly rather than assuming the set you buy has to be the set you play.

Even gaps matter less than adequate descent. A set with perfect twelve-yard spacing whose long irons land at thirty-eight degrees is still failing at the top, and no amount of gapping arithmetic will fix that. Descent angle is the number we protect first.
