Questions Answered

The twelve things people ask before they book

Answered the way we would answer them on the phone, which is to say without a sales pitch attached.

I am a 22 handicap. Is fitting wasted on me?
It is the opposite. A low handicap has enough consistency to compensate for a club that does not suit them; a higher handicap does not, so a poor fit costs them more shots per round, not fewer. The one caveat is repeatability — if your delivery changes completely from swing to swing, we will tell you at the halfway mark and offer to stop rather than fit an average that does not exist.
Why do you insist on the turf board for woods?
Because a hitting mat compresses under a sole that digs, and that compression hides the exact fault we are looking for. On the marked board, a head that enters two inches behind the ball leaves evidence you can photograph. Golfers who see two candidate heads scuff the board differently stop arguing with the recommendation immediately.
Do I have to buy clubs from you?
No. The build sheet is yours, with every spec printed on it, and roughly one session in seven ends with the golfer keeping what they already own. We charge for the bench time because the bench time is the product. If you want to take the specs to another builder, that is a legitimate use of what you paid for.
How long does a session actually take?
A single category runs ninety minutes. Two categories run about two hours. A full-bag day is roughly four hours with a break in the middle, and we genuinely recommend the break — fatigue changes your delivery enough to corrupt the last hour of data if you push through.
What is the difference between a hybrid and a driving iron for me?
Mass distribution and turf behaviour, mostly. A hybrid puts more weight low and back, which raises launch and flattens the descent problem for slower deliveries. A driving iron keeps the ball down and is much less forgiving on strikes away from centre. Which one wins depends on your delivery and your typical lie, and it is exactly the sort of question the bench answers in twenty minutes.
Can you fit me if my clubs are twenty years old?
Yes, and those sessions are often the most useful ones we run. We measure what you have first — loft, lie, length, swing weight, shaft frequency — and that baseline usually explains a problem the golfer has been blaming on themselves for a decade. Old clubs that were built to sensible specs sometimes survive the test, too.
Do you charge extra for the build?
The build labour is quoted separately from the session and is listed on the rates page. Components are billed at our cost plus a flat handling figure that does not change with the price of the part, so an expensive shaft does not earn us more than a cheap one. That structure exists specifically so the recommendation cannot be swayed by margin.
What if nothing beats the club I walked in with?
Then we write that on the sheet and you go home with your money still in the bank minus the session fee. It happens often enough that we plan for it. A session that confirms your gear is right is not a failed session — it removes the equipment question so you can spend the next season working on something that will actually help.
Do you fit left-handed golfers?
Yes, across every category. Left-handed head inventory is genuinely thinner from the manufacturers, so tell us when you book and we will pull what we can in advance. Occasionally a specific head has to be ordered in for a second short session, which we do not charge for.
Should I get lessons first or fit first?
If you are mid-swing-change with a coach, wait until the change has settled. If you are simply playing badly with equipment you have never had measured, fit first — it is very hard to work on a swing while fighting a lie angle that is four degrees off. We are happy to talk to your coach directly if that helps.
Is the studio only for men playing off single figures?
No, and we would like to retire the assumption. Women, juniors and seniors are fitted here on exactly the same measurement basis as anybody else, which means we start from your actual delivery rather than from a flex letter printed on a shaft. Junior sessions are shorter and cheaper because the club will be outgrown.
How far ahead should I book?
Saturdays run about two weeks out in season. Weekday afternoons frequently open up within a few days, and if you can take a Tuesday or Wednesday slot you will get a quieter studio and usually a little extra bench time. Winter is the easiest time to get in.

Still Unsure

Call and describe the problem in your own words. Ten minutes on the phone usually settles whether a session is the right spend for you.
