The club the studio is named after

Ninety minutes. Usually eight or nine heads, three survivors, and one uncomfortable conversation about the long iron you have been defending.

The core question

Where is your crossover point?

Every golfer has a loft above which a hybrid outperforms the equivalent iron, and below which the iron still wins. That threshold is personal. For a golfer delivering 95 mph with a 6-iron and a shallow angle of attack, the crossover might sit at the 5-iron. For somebody steeper and slower it can climb all the way to the 7-iron. For a strong player with a descending strike it might not exist below the 3-iron at all.

Finding that line is the whole session. We test the iron you own against hybrid candidates at matching lofts and compare four things: launch, descent angle, dispersion width, and what the turf board says about ground contact. Distance is deliberately the last item on the list, because a hybrid that flies four yards further and lands at twenty-eight degrees will not hold a green.

Sole width is not a cosmetic choice

Hybrid soles range from narrow iron-like profiles to broad, heavily cambered shapes that behave like small fairway woods. The wide ones resist digging and suit steeper deliveries and softer turf. The narrow ones cut through rough more cleanly and appeal to golfers who want to work the ball.

On the board this difference is stark. A steep golfer with a narrow-soled hybrid leaves a deep entry mark two inches behind the ball and loses most of the speed before contact. Widen the sole and the same swing produces a shallow skid and a completely different ball flight. The golfer has not changed anything.

Two hybrids that do the same job

The commonest gapping mistake we see is a pair of hybrids three degrees apart that produce a fourteen yard difference in carry — too close to justify both, and often overlapping with the fairway wood above them. We map the whole stretch during the session and frequently recommend dropping one club and widening the spacing on what remains.

Golfers resist this at first. They then discover that the freed slot goes to another wedge and their scoring gets better in a place they were not expecting.

Shaft choices are not the same as your irons

Hybrid shafts are usually lighter and longer than your iron shafts, which changes tempo. Many golfers arrive with a hybrid built on a shaft forty grams lighter than their 5-iron and cannot understand why the timing feels different. We often go heavier than stock, and the resulting consistency gain is one of the easiest wins in the whole bag.

The six numbers that decide a hybrid

Descent angle

Below about forty degrees a long approach will not stop on a firm green. This is the number that retires more long irons than any other.

Entry point on the board

Where the sole first meets the ground relative to the ball, photographed and compared head to head.

Dispersion width

Measured across the whole sample, not the best six shots. Wide left-to-right scatter kills a club regardless of average carry.

Launch relative to loft

Tells us whether the head's centre of gravity is doing what the marketing claims for your particular delivery.

Gap to the club above

Ten to fourteen yards is healthy. Six is a duplicate club and twenty-two is a hole in the bag.

Strike location

Face tape on every candidate. A head that only works from a perfect strike is not forgiving, whatever the box says.

Bring the long iron you distrust

Half the golfers who book this session leave still carrying it. The other half stop wondering.
