This one is decided on the ground, not in the air
If the sole fights the turf, nothing on the shaft rack will rescue the club. That is why the board comes out before the radar does.
Should you be carrying a 3-wood at all?
We ask it early because for a meaningful share of golfers the answer is no. A 15-degree head with a shallow face, played from turf, demands a delivery that arrives level and strikes within a small window near the middle. Golfers who cannot repeat that delivery hit the club well perhaps twice a round, and spend the rest of the season blaming themselves.
A 5-wood or a 7-wood, with more loft and a deeper centre of gravity, converts the same swing into a shot that gets airborne and lands steeply enough to stop. The distance loss against a well-struck 3-wood is real. The distance gain against a topped 3-wood is enormous. We look at the whole distribution rather than the best outcome.
Sole camber and the tight October lie
Around Knoxville most fairways are warm-season grass that goes firm and thin from late July onward. That surface is unforgiving of a flat, wide sole with no relief — the leading edge catches, the club decelerates, and the ball comes out low and left. Add camber and a little heel-toe relief and the same head glides.
The board makes this visible. We run each candidate over the marked surface, photograph the entry pattern, and lay the images beside each other. Golfers who have spent years assuming a wood was "just hard to hit" tend to go quiet at this point.
Face height matters more than golfers expect
A shallow face sits low behind the ball and encourages a sweeping strike from a good lie. A deeper face gives more forgiveness on strikes above centre and behaves better off a tee. Most golfers own a shallow-faced wood because it looked confidence-inspiring on the shelf, and half of them would be better served by something slightly deeper.
Length, and the shaft that came in the box
Stock fairway woods are frequently built long, which steepens the approach into the ground and makes centre contact harder. We trim more of these than any other club in the bag. Alongside that, stock shafts in woods tend to be light — often lighter than the driver shaft the same golfer plays, which is backwards. Going ten or fifteen grams heavier in a fairway wood is one of the most reliable consistency gains we produce.
Adjustable hosels are useful and slightly overrated
The sleeve lets us move loft and lie a degree or two, which is genuinely handy for fine-tuning at the end of a session. It cannot fix a head whose sole geometry is wrong for you, and it cannot rescue a shaft that is the wrong weight. We use it last, not first.

The 7-wood belongs in far more bags than it occupies. It holds greens from distances where a long iron simply cannot, it comes out of rough that eats hybrids, and the only genuine argument against it is that some golfers think it looks unserious. We are not persuaded by that argument.
