The gap between loft and attack angle explains your tee shot

There is one idea from the fitting bench that I wish every golfer carried around with them, and it is not complicated. It is the difference between two angles: how much loft the ball sees at impact, and the direction the clubhead is travelling when it gets there. The gap between those two numbers is called spin loft, and it quietly governs almost everything about a golf shot.

The idea in one paragraph

Imagine the clubhead moving along a line. Now imagine the face pointing somewhere slightly above that line. The angle between the two is the spin loft. A large gap means the face is sliding up the back of the ball, producing lots of spin and a soft, high shot with less ball speed. A small gap means the face is moving more directly through the ball, producing more speed and less spin.

That is genuinely the whole concept. Everything else is consequence.

Rule of thumb: more spin loft trades ball speed for spin and height. Less spin loft trades height and forgiveness for speed. Neither is universally better — the correct amount depends on how fast you swing and what you need the ball to do.

Why the driver is the special case

With every other club in the bag you want a reasonably generous spin loft, because you need the ball to climb and then stop. With a driver you want the opposite: the ball is teed up, you have no interest in it stopping quickly, and every rpm of unnecessary spin is carry you are giving away.

This is the entire reason golf instruction spends so much time telling people to hit up on the ball with a driver. Swinging upward reduces the gap between the face and the path without requiring you to deloft the club, which means you get less spin without also getting a lower launch. You keep the height and lose the spin, which is the good version of the trade.

Where golfers go wrong with this

The common failure is trying to reduce spin loft the other way — by leaning the shaft forward and delofting the driver at impact. This does reduce spin, but it also drops the launch angle, and the result is a low bullet that runs out of altitude and lands short. We see this pattern constantly in golfers who have been told their driver spin is too high.

The other failure is buying a low-spin head to solve the problem. Low-spin driver heads work by moving mass forward, which reduces spin and simultaneously reduces forgiveness on off-centre strikes. For a golfer whose spin problem is caused by a downward attack angle, that head will lower spin and lower launch at the same time, which is exactly the wrong direction.

What a bench can actually change

We cannot change your attack angle in ninety minutes and we do not try — that belongs with a coach. What we can do is build a club that works well with the attack angle you currently have.

  • Add static loft so that a downward strike still produces a usable launch angle
  • Move to a head with a rearward centre of gravity to raise launch without adding face loft
  • Shorten the build so the strike moves toward the centre of the face, where the vertical curvature is neutral
  • Raise the recommended tee height, which is free and helps more than people expect
  • Choose a shaft profile that does not actively deloft the club at the moment of impact

None of these are exotic. Together they routinely move a golfer from a low, spinning tee shot to something that carries fifteen yards further with no change to the swing.

The number to actually watch

If you are looking at a launch monitor readout and wondering which line matters, watch carry distance against dispersion, and treat spin as a diagnostic rather than a target. High spin with low launch means the face is delofted relative to the path — look at attack angle and strike location. Low spin with low launch means the club is simply not presenting enough loft — that is a head or shaft problem. High spin with high launch usually means the strike is low on the face.

Those three combinations cover the majority of tee shot complaints we hear, and none of them are solved by hitting the ball harder.

A note on the fairway wood

Everything above flips when the ball is on the ground. Off turf you cannot hit up on the ball, so spin loft is necessarily larger, and that is fine — you want a fairway wood to climb. Golfers who have internalised the low-spin driver message sometimes try to apply it to a 3-wood off the deck and wonder why the ball never gets airborne. Different club, different job, different geometry.
